BBNaija’s Gbenga Kayode Makes Bold Directorial Debut with “Bendel Girl”

BBNaija’s longtime director Gbenga Kayode steps into Nollywood’s cinematic spotlight with his feature film debut, Bendel Girl. Known simply as “Kayode” by fans of Big Brother Naija, the acclaimed director shaped the visual tone and energy of the reality series from Season 2 through Season 8.

Now, he’s trading unscripted drama for a gripping, time-bending mystery that marks a bold new chapter in his career. 

“Bendel Girl” is not your typical Nollywood drama. It’s a mind-bending mix of mystery, thriller, and heartache all rooted in the story of a teenager who vanishes in 1985 and reappears in 2024, exactly as she was, untouched by time.

Played by Saskay Jonah in her feature debut, Theresa’s return throws three young adults into chaos. Dave, Erika, and Osas are just going about their modern-day lives until they find her barefoot, confused, and claiming to be from the past. But this isn’t just a strange case of mistaken identity. As emotions swell and tensions crack, secrets start tumbling out, timelines blur, and the story takes you places you’re not ready for.

What unfolds is a gripping tale that questions everything: fate, love, prophecy, and the price of untold truths.

The cast is stacked: Tope Tedela, Amanda Iriekpen, Timi Abgaje, Tolani Baj, Tobi Bakre, Kayode Aderupoko Olaiya, Jibola Dabo, Kate Adepegba, and Toke Tinde each bringing raw emotion and authenticity to this bold film from The Michael Gbenga Company.

Directed with intention and flair, Bendel Girl was shot over four intense weeks in mid-2024 and finessed with two months of post-production magic. With distribution by Blue Pictures Limited, and backing from Kadi Media and Frodd Lifestyle Company, the final result is a tight 2hr 13min cinematic experience that blends Nigerian folklore, supernatural intrigue, and emotional storytelling.
