Eight years after making its mark in Africa, Showmax is stepping into a bold new era—and it’s doing so with flair. The homegrown streaming service is relaunching in February 2024 with a fresh brand identity, an all-new app, and a powerful product lineup set to shake up the African streaming space.
This relaunch follows the platform’s headline-making partnership with international media giant Comcast, owners of NBCUniversal and Sky. Together, they’re setting the stage for a next-level streaming experience made with African audiences in mind.
What’s New?
For starters, the new Showmax is rolling out three tailored plans:
• Showmax Entertainment
• Showmax Entertainment Mobile
• Showmax Premier League — a game-changer for sports fans. Powered by SuperSport, this is the first mobile-only Premier League streaming service in Africa, making it easier than ever for football fans to catch every single match—anytime, anywhere.
CEO Marc Jury is clearly hyped.
“We have an incredibly powerful new technology platform, a bold brand that truly represents our driving spirit, and a content slate that is unmatched,” he said. “No other streaming service in Africa can offer what Showmax is bringing to the table in the new year.”
A Content Slate That Hits Different
In December, Showmax starts turning up the heat with a wave of new originals across the continent. Think:
• “Twende” – Showmax’s first 2D animation, starring a lovable boda-boda-driving pangolin.
• New seasons of hit shows like “Adulting”, “Kwa Mam’Mkhize”, and “Wura”
• A dramatic reunion for “The Mommy Club”
• New titles like “Convict Conman” (a true crime doc), “Trompoppie” (a murder mystery), “Agu” (legal drama), “School Run”, “A Merry X-Mess”, and “Sports Wives”
Showmax is also dropping new weekly episodes of “Spinners”, the first African series ever selected for Canneseries, every Wednesday through December 27.
Hollywood Is Coming, Too
Thanks to the Comcast deal, Showmax now has direct access to a treasure trove of global hits. That means more from studios like Universal Pictures, HBO, Sky, Lionsgate, Sony, Peacock, and Warner Bros.
December alone is packed with blockbusters like:
• The Super Mario Bros. Movie
• Fast X
• Poker Face
• The Winter King
Breaking Records and Getting Noticed
Showmax isn’t just building momentum—it’s getting the recognition to match:
• Named one of the RoW40 by Rest of World for outpacing the West
• Awarded “Most Innovative On-demand Video Streaming Platform” at Nigeria’s BrandCom Awards 2023
“Streaming in Africa is about to take off,” says Jury. “And we’re ready to change the game.”
