What happens when inheritance is laced with secrets and legacy comes at a deadly price? The Serpent’s Gift, directed by Kayode Kasum and produced by Winifred Mena-Ajakpovi, explores this question in a culturally rich thriller that delves into betrayal, tradition, and power dynamics within an influential Nigerian family.
Set in Eastern Nigeria and steeped in Igbo traditions, the film follows the aftermath of the sudden death of Nduka Sylvanus, a revered businessman whose passing leaves more than just a vacuum—it sets off a chain of conflict. At the centre is Ijeoma, a poised yet enigmatic young widow who inherits her late husband’s vast empire. Her unexpected elevation unsettles not only the family but also long-buried loyalties and rivalries.
As tensions rise, a struggle over property transforms into a complex narrative of ambition, secrecy, and the cost of silence. Ijeoma is forced to navigate a treacherous path through shifting allegiances, cultural expectations, and spiritual undertones that test her resolve.
Shot on location in Igbo heartlands, The Serpent’s Gift employs striking visuals, detailed costume design, and dialogue that reflects the cultural texture of its setting. The film features a strong ensemble cast including Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Stan Nze, Tina Mba, Daniel Etim-Effiong, Beverly Osu, and Ric Hassani.
Winifred Mena-Ajakpovi, known for producing layered, female-driven narratives, brings a sharp eye for cultural nuance and character depth, while Kayode Kasum continues his track record of combining visual storytelling with mass appeal.
The Serpent’s Gift is scheduled for nationwide cinema release on 29 August. With early buzz among industry insiders and exhibitors, the film is positioned as one of Nollywood’s most anticipated releases of the year.
