Uzoamaka and Bucci Bring Graceful Truth to Marriage in “Shaping Us”

What happens when the quiet moments in a marriage speak the loudest?

Shaping Us, now streaming on Showmax, is a tender, honest drama that leans into the messy, emotional truths of marriage, motherhood, and mental health in Nigerian homes. It doesn’t shout it sits with the silence.

Uzoamaka Power leads the story as Zainab, a young mother quietly slipping into postpartum depression, while Bucci Franklin plays her husband, Doctor Yan, a man trying but failing to understand the growing space between them. Their relationship, layered and intimate, anchors the film in something heartbreakingly real.

Directed by Kambili Ofili, the story unfolds during a farewell dinner, but what begins as a simple gathering slowly unpacks each guest’s emotional baggage. From Biodun and his wife’s hidden tension to a slow-blooming romance between Maks (Omowunmi Dada) and Kwame (Jordan Bangoji), Shaping Us draws a full picture of love in transition.

There’s a kitchen scene quiet, clumsy, full of things unsaid that lingers. No raised voices, no theatrics. Just two people trying to reach each other through the fog of fatigue and misunderstanding. It’s raw and relatable.

Uzoamaka’s performance is especially moving she doesn’t cry, she disappears. And in doing so, she tells a story we don’t see enough: that sometimes, the hardest part of motherhood is pretending everything is fine.

Shaping Us doesn’t offer easy answers. But it holds space for the questions we’re often too afraid to ask.

Watch it now on Showmax.
