Kemi Adetiba: Redefining Nollywood on a Global Stage

When the name Kemi Adetiba is mentioned, it calls to mind a career marked by creativity, resilience and vision. More than a filmmaker, she has become one of the defining figures shaping African cinema and amplifying Nigerian stories to audiences across the world.

Kemi Adetiba began her academic career studying Law at the University of Lagos before completing her training at the Nigerian Law School. Yet, her passion for storytelling soon steered her towards film. She refined her craft at the New York Film Academy, pivoting from law to a path that would alter the landscape of Nollywood.

Her early recognition came from directing music videos, where her style combined sharp storytelling with striking visual concepts. She collaborated with some of Nigeria’s biggest stars, directing projects such as TY Bello’s Ekundayo, Omawumi’s Today Na Today, Waje and Tiwa Savage’s Onye, Olamide’s Anifowose and Sitting on the Throne, and Bez’s Say. These videos earned her multiple awards, including Best Female Video at the Soundcity Music Video Awards and the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

In 2008, her short film Across a Bloodied Ocean was screened at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles and the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, marking an early milestone in her career.

Her feature film debut arrived in 2016 with The Wedding Party, a romantic comedy that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and grossed over ₦453 million, at the time becoming the highest-grossing Nigerian film.

Two years later, she released King of Boys, a political-crime thriller that firmly established her as one of Nollywood’s boldest directors. Led by Sola Sobowale in a career-defining role, the film grossed more than ₦245 million and developed cult status among Nigerian audiences.

In 2021, Adetiba made history when Netflix commissioned King of Boys: The Return of the King, a seven-part limited series and the first of its kind for Nollywood. It expanded Nigerian cinema into long-form streaming television and was widely recognised as a landmark moment in African storytelling.

Her latest work, To Kill a Monkey, released on Netflix in July 2025, explores cybercrime, morality and the blurred lines between survival and exploitation. It reflects her evolution not only as a director but also as a producer and writer, bringing contemporary Nigerian narratives to global platforms.

Adetiba’s contributions have earned her recognition at home and abroad. Her honours include Best Female Video at the Soundcity Music Video Awards and Nigeria Entertainment Awards, a Headies nomination for Best Music Video Director, the City People Entertainment Award for Best Music Video Director, HNWOTY’s Woman of the Year in Film & TV, and Best African Movie at the African Entertainment Awards USA for King of Boys.

Kemi Adetiba has consistently pushed Nollywood forward, demonstrating that Nigerian cinema can balance commercial success with authentic cultural storytelling. Her work has broadened the scope of African narratives, reinforcing their relevance not only locally but globally. With each new project, she continues to expand the boundaries of what Nollywood can achieve.
