The wait is over. Iyanu, the Nigerian superhero animation that’s been making waves overseas, is now streaming across Africa on Showmax.

Based on the hit graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder by Nigerian writer and animator Roye Okupe, the animated series is set in a richly imagined version of Yorubaland. At the center of the story is Iyanu, a teenage orphan who suddenly discovers she has divine powers — just in time to face a growing evil threatening her entire kingdom.

Alongside her loyal friends, the daring Biyi, the brainy Toye, and a mystical leopard named Ekun, Iyanu embarks on a journey packed with ancient secrets, spiritual power, and modern adventure.

The voice cast? 100% Nigerian.
Featuring talents like Serah Johnson (Iyanu), Okey Jude (Biyi), Samuel Kugbiyi (Toye), plus fan favorites Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Shaffy Bello, Stella Damasus, and more.

First launched in April 2025 on Cartoon Network US, Iyanu quickly became a top 10 hit on Max, showing that African stories truly resonate worldwide.

Created by YouNeek Studios and backed by Dark Horse Comics (The Umbrella Academy, Hellboy), the animation blends African folklore with modern superhero energy. Screen Rant even called it “a mix between The Last Airbender and Black Panther” and it’s easy to see why.

Roye Okupe, the series creator, said it best:

“I grew up watching superhero shows on DStv. Seeing Iyanu launch in 44 African countries is surreal.”

All episodes are now streaming on Showmax as of Friday, June 13, 2025.
